普通に生活しているとWindowsしか知らない人が多いと思うけど、LinuxというOSがある。スマホやパソコンでwebページにアクセスすると、裏ではデータベースサーバやアプリケーションサーバなどが動いてる。このサーバでは必ずとっていいほどLinuxが動いている。細かいことを言うとCentOSとかUbuntuみたいな感じでディストリビューション（種類）は違うけど、Linuxが動いてる。
またスマホ用のOSにAndroidとあるが、これはLinuxをスマホ用に改造したOSだ。
他にも工場とかのセンサーデバイスでもLinuxが動いたりする。
さらに、映画「ターミネーター」でアーノルド・シュワルツェネッガーが演じている「T-800」のOSもLinuxだ。
知らない人は多いだろうけど、世界のあらゆる所で稼働しているのがLinux。Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionaryは、そんなLinuxの生みの親のLinus Torvaldsの半生とLinux誕生秘話、Linusの人生に対する哲学などを書いている。

「LinuxはLinusさんが作った」と言っても、よく考えて欲しい。OSを自分で一から作ったのだ。リーナスは天才だが、自作OSを作れたかと言うと、パソコンやプログラミングが好きだったからだ。同級生はベッドカバーの下に隠した「プレイボーイ」を夜中に隠れて読んでいたが、リーナスは夜中に隠れてプログラミングをしていた。
「好きこそものの上手なれ」という言葉があるが、まさにその通りの人生を歩んだ。それが興じてリーナスが作ったLinuxは世界中に広まり、今やLinuxが動かない世界は想像できないにまでなっている。他人からの共感を得られなくても、自分が好きなことは周りのことなんか気にせず続けるのが良い。

Linux関係の技術書は腐るほど世の中にあるが、誕生秘話や開発者の哲学などを書いている本はないと言ってもいい。仕事でLinuxに関わっている人はもちろん、仕事で関わっていない人も「Linuxとは何か？」ということを知っていて損はないので読んでおくべき一冊だと思う。
僕は英語の勉強も兼ねて洋書を1ヶ月くらいかけ読んだが、英語が苦手とか読みたくないという方は、日本語版（それがぼくには楽しかったから 全世界を巻き込んだリナックス革命の真実 (小プロ・ブックス)）もあるので、そちらを読むことを勧める。
Many people have never heard Linux. Linux is a kind of OS (Operating System) such as Windows or Android and so on. When you access the Internet through a PC or a smart phone, some database servers or some application servers work. Almost the servers run on Linux.
If you use Galaxy or Xperia, the smart phone runs on Android OS. The Android OS is a kind of Linux to specialize in smart phone. And also, some sensor devices which work in a factory run on Linux.
Furthermore, T-800, which is acted by Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator, runs Linux.
A ton of Linux works in our life although many people don't know about Linux. Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary tells you about the behind-the-scenes story of Linux or thoughts on life of Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux.

"Just for fun". This is the reason why Linux was able to create Linux from scratch (exactly, he is a genius). When Linus's friends were reading a Playboy at midnight, Linus was programming.
"Do what you love and the money will follow you", that's a proverb in Japan. The proverb expresses Linus's life. Linux, being born from the Linus's pleasure, is distributed worldwide and has changed our lives. You cannot live without Linux.
Even if nobody sympathizes with your thoughts or your life, you should do that you like.

There are a lot of technical books about Linux. However, I think that no books tell the behind-the scenes story of Linux or Linus's thoughts of life. I strongly recommend to read the book for not only people who know Linux, but also people who don't know Linux.
